Empowering Futures: Join Us for Our Krispy Kreme Fundraiser in Support of Girls' Education

By: Madison Keatings and Maryam Ali

As of September 28th, 2024, Champions of Change is holding a Krispy Kreme Fundraising event. All proceeds will go towards Plan Canada’s efforts to improve access to education for children, especially girls, in low-income countries. Plan Canada advocates for the many barriers girls face in an attempt to exercise their right to education including gender inequality, violence, child marriage, poverty, and a lack of safe and available washrooms.

According to Plan Canada, an estimated 258 children (129 million girls) are not in school,  despite education being a human right (UNESCO 2019). While recent statistics indicate that at the secondary school level, global out-of-school populations between boys and girls are similar, out-of-school populations among girls at the primary school level are disproportionate—with girls being more likely to be out of school (UNESCO 2019). In addition, due to the economic impact of COVID-19, estimates predict that post-pandemic nearly 24 million children across the globe will drop out or not have access to education (UNESCO 2020). This lack of access to education increases girls and young women’s vulnerability to child marriage, early pregnancy, and gender-based violence (UNESCO 2020).

Plan Canada offers a variety of donation types, called “Gifts of Hope” that directly support women and girls, helping to combat the barriers they face in accessing education. Gifts of Hope that directly support school-related initiatives include “School Essentials”, “Send a Girl to School”, and “Help Equip a School”—all of which support girls’ education by providing them with school essentials, such as pencils and textbooks, and programs that support teacher training, violence reduction, improving hygiene practices, and proper emergency response (Plan Canada 2024). All of these supports help make schools into productive, safe, inspiring spaces where children can access the best possible education (Plan Canada 2024). Each Gift of Hope is matched up to eight times by Plan Canada’s partner organization, amplifying your contribution and creating lasting change in vulnerable communities. Through our Krispy Kreme fundraiser, Champions of Change aims to purchase multiple school-related Gifts of Hope. Your donation not only helps us to provide essential school supplies and support education programs but also supports Plan Canada’s broader mission to tackle the root causes of gender inequality.
