October 11: International Day of the Girl

Since the United Nations adopted October 11th as International Day of the Girl in December 2011, the date has served to celebrate the power of girls and highlight the unique barriers they face around the world. These barriers include but are not limited to gender-based violence, educational disparity, child marriage and early pregnancy.

PLAN International’s “Because I am a Girl” Movement tackles gender equality issues to ensure that all girls’ rights and needs are met effectively, so that these girls can reach their full potential. By providing girls with a plethora of leadership opportunities as well as a safe platform to voice their thoughts and opinions, PLAN is advocating for radical change and defying norms in many countries around the world.

International Day of the Girl brings a global focus to the various modes of discrimination and prejudice that girls face including a lack of representation for young females in the global development agenda. This day serves to promote the idea that girls deserve their voice to be heard. As a club, we aim to help empower girls and support #GirlsTakeover, a 2019 PLAN initiative, in which girls seek to challenge stereotypes, beliefs and stigmatizing attitudes reinforced by media.
